The very next morning there was a noticeable shift in perspective. Suddenly everything centered on this tiny little creature and her needs. At first that was simple enough: all she did was sleep, eat, pee, poop and cry, but her cry was more like a wail demanding immediate attention.

However the wagon train could not put its agenda aside to care for a newborn. As usual the next morning, campfires were started, coffee pots boiling, and people were dressing, hitching oxen and mules and heading out as if nothing unusual had occurred, and the Willett’s wagon was no exception.

Leroy hustled to help get things moving. He roused the boys and gave instructions for them to get dressed. He hurried to the wagon and peeked in, only to find Misses Willett and Cora sleeping soundly. Little Louise Anna was beginning to fidget, and Leroy knew she would soon begin to rouse her maw and sister.

Mister Willett had slept on a pallet under the wagon and was now dressed and pulling on his boots. Leroy did not wait for Misses Willett and Cora to wake but immediately got breakfast going and ordered Ben, “Go help your paw get the wagon hitched.” Ben nodded vigorously and ran to help.

Tom asked, “What can I do?”

“Tom, you can unhitch Molly and take her down to the crick and let her drink her fill and then hurry back before we pull out. And for God’s sake, Tom, don’t fall in.”

Tom and Ben finished their chores, and Mister Willett downed a quick cup of coffee and a couple of pieces of bacon that were left over from the previous night.

Leroy drowned out the fire and managed to save some of the coffee for the womenfolk while Mister Willett climbed aboard the wagon and with a giddyup and a jerk of the reins, the wagon lurched forward. With that, little Louise let out a loud wail, which along with the movement of the wagon, jolted Cora and her maw wide awake.

Cora, disheveled and sleepy-eyed, poked her head out the back canopy and asked Leroy, “Are we on the move already?”

Leroy simply nodded and said, “I saved you and yore maw some coffee.”

“Thanks, but I need to stretch my legs. Goodness, I’m so tired. Can you help me down?”

Leroy raised his hands as Cora leaned forward and fell into his arms. She sighed loudly and then tried to straighten her hair and reached for her bonnet and made an effort to poke loose strands of her blonde curls back into place.

Meanwhile, Louise continued to cry until the Misses pulled her to her breast.

Cora seemed somewhat disoriented and looked around for something to eat for her maw and herself.

Leroy handed her some of the salted venison, and she eagerly tore off a piece and began to chew, all the while walking along with the wagon. Then she took some of the venison, and Leroy helped her climb aboard the wagon, and once inside, he handed her the coffee, which she spilled when the wagon wobbled.
